Kerry Flyer are not just a transport provider – we are also an employment provider. We have worked hard over the years to meet the living wage standard, and having attained that, it’s our intention to keep up with this. This can be challenging given that there is always someone who will provide transport cheaper.
Kerry Flyer Transport
When Kerry Flyer originally started as a social enterprise we received funding under the Social Economy Programme, laterally the Community Service Programme. Changes in Government and direction over the years have made it difficult to keep up with advice and parameters of funding, and because of this we handed back our funding in 2019. Our primary goal is the provision of accessible services and the provision of employment in a very rural area. We have adapted and changed over the years to ensure we that we can always meet that goal. Our most important consideration above all else are our service users and staff.
The introduction of compulsory tendering for all services brought its own challenges. It can be hard to ensure that you are providing the best and safest service for our clients whilst also competing within the market. As a board we made a decision that safety, training and equipment is the most important element for our passengers, and we will never compromise on that. Ensuring that we can provide that while keeping the cost keen for the customer is a challenge.
There have been lots of changes and additional regulation in the passenger transport industry over the last number of years. Whilst this can be very demanding, we feel that we always rise to the challenge.
Finally, operating diesel vehicles in a climate that needs urgent action on climate change can be challenging. We try our best to do our bit for the enviroment, and it’s something we work on continually. Actions include driver training to ensure that drivers drive in an eco friendly manner and the streamlining of our admin services to reduce our carbon footprint. We also explore other types of vehicles to see what might work in a very rural setting.
